To those with tattoos

I was thinking about getting a tattoo on our next trip to Bali. My wife reminded me about when we had tattoos done in Oz. We were advised to keep a protective ointment on them and to keep them wrapped up in Glad Wrap for a few days. This would seem to rule out swimming/surfing if we get tattood in Bali.
I would like to know how tattooing may have affected others while in Bali.
