I have done the ride from Kuta to Lovina over the mountain. The road was very good. The trip only took about 3 hours. I returned from Lovina via Candi Dasa then onto Kuta with no dramas. Road were good just like the back roads here in Western Australia. My only hassle on the trip was my lack of a good map. Enjoy your trip it is well worth it.
Can I suggest you get your license here in Australia. You are covered by your travel insurance if you have an Aus lic.
