Instead of engendering more aggression, you start to build raport, and even a little trust.
I know that Brian uses much the same techniques as I do, and I am sure that it works just as well for him as me.
Also, the visual deterrent of an umbrella or walking stick is usually good enough.
When sufficiently aroused, dogs will attack in packs, and the user of pepper spray better be pretty good with it at close range and when the panic sets in.
The setting into the dogs mind that white people inflict pain may not be good for those unfortunates who are not armed to the teeth who may come along later.
25 years of walking around Kuta early and late, and never been attacked yet (However, the downside is locals view of lunatic bule walking about with half a spanish omelette down his trousers!!)
