You will get a much better exchange rate by doing in over there. As long as you are carefull and follow a few tips posted on the BTF, you will be ok. Just don't let the money changer get their hands on your money until you have counted out there, in front of him/her. Some have nothing on Houdini!!In saying all that, we always take over a few thousand rp, ($20A) just so we have a little on hand on our arrival. Don't be tempted to get any $ changed at the airport. They are a rip-off.
Really, if you take the same care in Bali as you do at home when shopping etc, you will be fine. Just don't get distracted and try to have another person with you .. a lil calculator is also a help!
