That was in the 1820's and I believe they were still waiting for someone to invent a rubber ball.
When they did the beautiful game turned to a round ball as it made the game easier but the men who played Rugby favoured an oval ball, more like the pigs bladder, as this increased the skill levels required to gather a ball with an unpredictable bounce.
