Blue water safaris have a fast boat from Benoa Bali that stops at Lembongan island,Gili T and Lombok in the one ticket!
I think Lombok and the Gilis get quite busy in May as its the start of the European holiday season,might be different this year due to the economic down turn? But if you are a large person you may not want to be walking around looking for places to stay so might be best to plan ahead and book accommodation for Lombok/Gilis
I think you will have to find out for yourself where you are best to stay this time for future trips?
I had a big break from Bali 1989 until around 1998-99 and got a bit of a shock at the changes but traveling back a bit more frequently since I tend not to notice the changes much.
I still like Kuta but you may hate it?
