Although I don't think I dreaded turning fifty as much as you seem to, (LOL) I didn't want a party or any fuss so my husband and I spent 2 weeks in Bali. I'm not into massages and pampering...give me a good book and a block of chocolate and I'm happy!!
On the actual day of my birthday we went on the Bike Baik tour. It was the most memorable day. We stopped at a school and the children sang Happy Birthday to me; once in English and once in Balinese. The lunch was beautiful and they had even prepared a birthday cake.
We had a quiet romantic dinner at Greenhouse in Ubud (restaurant attached to Pertiwi resort) They brought out another cake with my name on it! The waiter had introduced himself and asked our names and I had mentioned it was my birthday but the cake had my name on it spelt correctly!! Unbeknownst to us my family had somehow contacted the restaurant and told them we 'might' be there
.....so I would highly recommend spending your birthday in Bali and doing something memorable on the day.
