It will cost you a lot less hiring a car than taking taxis or using drivers, especially if the cost is split between a few. But you MUST have an International Lic (get from RAC or your local equivalent). Otherwise if you have an accident travel isurance (another MUST) won't cover your costs - a medivac back to Darwin can cost around AUD$200K. More to your home city.

Cars there don't have roof racks so take things to tie the boards securely onto the car (handy to take in your hand luggage for the trip from the airport to your hotel).

As far as the police are concerned you shouldn't have any worries unless you break the law eg by not having a valid lic or some other infringement. Bribery is to be avoided. Politely stand your ground if you honestly feel that you have done nothing wrong. Otherwise, pay ... dunno .... rp50K? It's a good idea not to pull out a wallet full of cash. Probably won't get pulled over often.

It's easy to find places that rent cars. Just wander around your hotel &/or search the archives here. Be sure to take it for a test drive first & check brakes, aircon etc. Ask for the car to be full of petrol (& pay for it) otherwise you'll get a car with an empty tank.
