Jetstar do not give refunds of taxes

unless they have changed their policy in the last 2 years. I had to cancel a flight with them a couple of years ago (that was when you could only contact them by mail and it took 6 weeks to even get a letter to say that they had received my letter).

I tried to argue that since I cancelled the flight well in advance surely I should be able to claim the government/airport taxes (I knew that I wouldn't be able to claim the flight cost). They said that the taxes were non refundable. At the time I was quite angry and tried to find a government body which could help clarify the legalities of not refunding taxes but it appeared at the time that the airlines could basically do as they wished.
