For my money, the fingerprinting story is a Furphy.
At a guess, this could be the implimentation of biometric face scanning. Biometric scanning compares the facial proportions in the passport holders chip with the photo taken as they stand at the counter. It's done in conjuction with a human opperator in many airports around the world. In major Australian centres Australian passport holders can even go through an automated queues.
