hey, it's going to be my first time in Bali this July, i guess i might not be qualified to dispense any advice, but i do have a hotel to recommend.
do check out www.tunehotels.com, it's a company under Malaysia's budget airline Airasia. Tune Hotels are kinda like a no-frills, 5-star budget hotel, or as they say, "5 star sleeping experience at a 1 star price".
here's the catch, the provide the most basic amenities, and only a fan is available in each room. if you would like air-conditioning, you would have to buy credits. same with towel and toiletries, there is an extra charge for it, but you can easily solve this by bringing your own. breakfast not included, which is just fine, as most hotel breakfasts suck anyway. should you want breakfast at your hotel, just choose the breakfast option, and again, you will be charged a fee for it. all these extras are not very expensive.
family and friends have stayed at their hotels in other locations, and i have heard nothing but positive reviews about their rooms. their beds are comfortable, and they have good quality showers, not the kind that dribbles water.
i got my room for about an average of $46AUD/night, inclusive of air-con credits and towels&toiletries for two.
P.S. no tv in the room. but who watches tv on holiday? go out and have fun! and sorry for the long rant, i hope this helps.
