take 1/2 cash to change and half on your usual ATM card or a Visa debit card. Just check on the back of your card that it has a "plus" or "cirrus" symbol displayed. If I am going to use an ATM I use one at a bank which may or may not mean it's safer but at least if you have a problem you can go into the bank to get it sorted.

Never had a problem taking cash but that is not to say it will not happen sometime! Never had a problem with ATMs either but just beware that the cash comes out before your card does. There will often be a sign on the screen saying "Do you want further transactions?" so you then hit "NO" and your card will be returned. If you walk away forgetting your card somebody can just carry on with transactions from your account.

I met a young lady checking into a hotel last November who had done just that and didn't notice until 2 days later when she came to pay her hotel bill and her credit card was not to be found. I lent her the money and she upheld my faith in human nature by paying me back via Western Union as soon as I was back in Aus. so it does happen!!

If you tell us where you plan to stay somebody will be sure to know the nearest honest money changer and ATM.
