But after all the talk about it i thought you were taken to a lounge and your passports were taken by somebody else to clear immigration and get your VOA stamp while you waited in a separate area?

Why are your passports collected? Couldn't they just be stamped where the air crew go through and you are checked against your passport by immigration?
