Gastroenteritis (the common covering name) can be caused by many, many things; such as a Virus; or Bacterial infection which can be caused by many types of bacteria - Campylobacter, E.Coli, Salmonella being just a few; Or it may be parasitic such as Cryptosporsis, or Giardia.
It can also be the start of illnesses such as Dengue Fever and Malaria.

Incubation times can vary greatly from several hours to several weeks - for example the incubation time for Campylobacter ranges from 6 hours to 12 days before onset of symptoms.

The only way to fully diagnose is a very hefty range of testing of various body fluid samples.

You can also re-infect yourself with some of these if not careful ensure all towels, sheets, clothing are washed at high temperature and that correct handwashing practise is used. Do not use fabric handtowels in the bathroom, use paper towel and dispose of it - this decreases infection risk.
