There is something of a myth about Bali and beaches in my view.
To be honest I have better beaches on my doorstep in Aus than anything Bali has to offer.
Kuta Beach is iconic, but more for atmosphere than anything really "tropical beachy".
There is good snorkelling around, but often in the best places the "beach" is stoney or coarse black sand.
Lombok has it all over Bali when it comes to beaches.
Perhaps you could consider Tanjung B or Sanur as quieter places than the Kuta hub, and these can offer reasonable beaches and some sheltered swimming.
