drive through the middle, lots of windy roads and forest, and beautiful views. Driving down the coast is a complete difference as it is very dry and barren in places (due to the past volcano eruption of 1963 (I think?). Very interesting trip but it will take about 3 + hours from the south. Stop on the way at Git Git falls and other pretty spots and make a couple of days of it - stay at Lovina a couple of nights and then Candi Dasa on the way back around the coast for a different Bali experience. I would recommend Rambutan Cottages in Lovina and Shirl's Cottages (Temple Cafe) in Candi Dasa to stay.
