I am 30 and went to Bali by myself last year.
Being a young single female, I chose to stay at kuta townhouses as I wanted something nice and safe around the Poppies 1 area. However, if you are on a budget, you will find heaps of cheap places in the same area.
I would definitely stick around Poppies 1 and 2. There are a lot of small restaurants/bars like Bali Agung, Kubuku, Secret Garden, etc where you will very easily strike up a conversation and make friends in no time.
Like cpbulli says, footy at KTH is always good times! I am a massive cats fan and watched the grand final there last year. It was gold - even if there is a bit of a bogan element :)
Enjoy!!
