We had bike licenses for Aus anyway and took international license too. We didn't get stopped the whole trip though. It seemed pretty relaxed from our experience.
We hired bikes from 'Wendy Silver Shop' on Dyana Pura. She also does car and bike hire and was very good to deal with. Their number is 081 338 557 807.
Can't recommend having a bike enough. It really made us feel at home having our own transport. It's quick to get around and fairly safe as you are generally going no faster than 40kph anyway.
