Recently travelled Bali-Melb with AA and booked hot seats in rows 1,2 and 3. Would not bother again with rows 2 & 3 as only advantage was getting off quicker (which doesn't make a great deal of difference anyway). We didn't get on any earlier even with children, boarded after 1/3 of plane was full. They didn't call out the earlier rows to board first, just asked eveyone to get in the line.Row 1 has the extra leg room but the rest are just the same as rest of the plane. Fortunately they didn't cost a great deal more for the Hot Seats so wasn't angry but would have been had we paid a lot more as you do on other airlines for the upgraded seats.Row 1 is worth it though for the extra room.
