They might say no, but it's worth an ask.
You might have more luck with private accommodation where you're dealing directly with the owner rather than staff who have to keep to the rules.
I didn't ask but the owner of the place in Bali even said not to worry about paying the deposit. The owner of the place i'm staying at in Penang has also said same thing. I've never stayed at either place before and know no-one who has, so that was very good of them. Two -way trust. They're trusting my word i'll be there, and i'm trusting theirs that they'll keep the booking with no deposit or cc show.
