Hi Heather
Our young bloke (now 24) has been insulin dependant since he was 4 and we've been taking him to Bali since he could crawl. Never had a problem taking syringes and insulin pens. Since "911" have always put the sharps (syringes and tips) in our main luggage and the insulin vials and pens in cabin luggage (along with Dr's letter) and never had a problem. Only once were we questioned and the Dr's letter took care of that enquiry.
