You asked a month or 2 ago about the Champlung Mas. We've just arrived back from 10 days there and though the initial arrival at the hotel was not the best, the overall stay there was quite enjoyable in an old hotel needing some TLC & reno's.
We were given room 69, with all the Balinese there sniggering amongst themselves about the number and saying, you have best room or you have lucky room. Going in to the room, we found it to be very large and at that stage all was good. We then turned on the air con which blew hot air for some time. I opened the fridge and out poured water, so that wasn't working either. We turned on the TV and got snow or no reception on every channel, which by the way are all Indonesian, no English speaking channels, although you may get an English movie around 8pm on one or two channels. We then checked out the bathroom which is very old and will stay that way for some time yet. The water pressure in the shower was minimal and we were'nt feeling too energetic to have to run around in the shower to get wet, but we managed to get by with it for the entire time there. We then checked the toilet, which didn't flush. Went to reception with the list of repairs required and with a cheerful smile, was told no problem, will all be done. We went straight in to the pool, which is quite a good size and has a good pool bar, but the water was quite warm. After that we went back to the room to find the air con working and the fridge working. TV still bad and toilet still not flushing. Went and asked for a new room and after looking at that one, decided to stay where we were as our original room was much bigger, so asked if the TV could be changed and get the toilet fixed. Another smile and no problem. I decided that while they were "fixing" the toilet, I would journey to the poolside toilet whe needed. we put up with this for 4 days and happened to mention this problem to another holiday maker in Harold, who said leave it with me. He went straight to the manager and in 15 minutes it was working, so the moral is, go to the top straight away, don't go through reception. The Manager's name is Bungli and he's a nice bloke and will get stuff done for you pretty well straight away. Apparently, Harold goes there 4 times a year and has significant pull in the hotel. Almost forgot, we had an attack of bed bugs also and told them about this and didn't have problems after that with getting bitten. The hotel is just starting a renovation programme with a new poolside bar being built to use, when the sunken bar gets renovated. Many of the old rooms on the right hand side of the hotel have been knocked down and a new pool, bar and new rooms will be built, but not by the time you're there. The american breakfast is adequate, but not much variety. If you're after vegemite for toast, theres a blue bag been left in the kitchen by someone previously with vegemite, jam & peanut butter in it to use. The hotel location is quite good, being not far from Melasti St, which is surprisingly a bit laid back for Bali. There are a number of good bars/restaurants in that area, being Uncle Norm's, Sheppy's, Legends & Billy's & the Bamboo Bar. The food in these places is really good and still at cheap prices, with happy hours for drinks, making them even more appealing. We were shown Ketut's fixed price shop just up a lane off Sahadewa St (Garlic Lane), where she gives you the prices of things so you don't need to barter. The prices you pay, you may get at other shops, but that would be after some serious bartering, so this takes the hassle out of it. Overall, we didn't mind the Champlung Mas. You get what you pay for at this place and if you have problems, go straight to the boss. We would probably stay there again and would probably request room 69, as it's pretty spacious and they may even have the shower working properly by then.
Hope you enjoy your stay there and let us know how you went.
