I simply take my unlocked mobile, go to one of the many outlets and always purchase a Mentari simcard. They put it in for you and set it up. Remember to ask for your new telephone number. They usually stick it to the outside of the phone for me. I can't remember what I pay for the simcard. I top it up with however much credit I need. I usually start with 100,000 rp(about $12AUS)and this lasts for ages especially as I have about 10 minute conversations to Australia at a time. Whenever I am getting low on credit I just go and top it up again. They will give you code to use before number to call Australia and a number to check your credit. I use my phone to call or text within Bali, and also call and text often to Australia. It is very cheap and a wonderful way to keep in touch. If I ever have any credit left as I am leaving Bali I give my simcard to a Balinese and let them use the rest of the credit. I absolutely would never use roaming, you don't need it and it is very expensive. You just have to remember to let everyone know your new number while in Bali, although it is best for you to take advantage of the cheap rate and do the contacting. Good luck!
