I've used Iphone in Bali with no issues. Had two unlocked with Optus before going there last year. Who is your phone company in Oz? At least with Optus, did you call them with your Iphone when asking them to unlock it. If you call on a regular phone to unlock it, and even quoting the serial numbers etc,, it will not work. You need to have requested the unlock calling from your Iphone. After Optus have put through the unlock codes, up to 1 week later, you need to do a full reset and update through Itunes. Have to have an internet connection when doing it. The update was around 300mb, quite large and after it had finished, you should be greeted with a message that says "Congratulations, Your Phone is now Unlocked" or something along those lines. If you don't remember seeing that message, then either the reset hasn't worked, or your phone company in Australia hasn't put the unlock codes through to apple. A full reset will delete everything on the Iphone, so make sure you do a Backup first.
