Last year I caught a third class train from Surabaya to Banyuwangi.
It was the eve of Idul Fitri and there were no seats. The train was not air conditioned and I had to stand in the aisle for several hours while being jostled by pedlars. The train arrived several hours late in central Banyuwangi at 1 am in the morning. I found an expensive hotel room and left next day for Gilmanuk.
I have done the Surabaya to Gilmanuk several times by bus and I much prefer this option.
If you look at a map, the direct bus from Gilmanuk to Lovina is a lot shorter than going via Denpasar.
