My husband goes to a remote part of Indonesia every year to surf for 2 months - there are no ATMs or money changers so he has to take a LOT of rupiah in cash - inches & inches of it. It's a constant worry for him. We read the posts about portable safes & decided that attaching one to part of the bed would be the best idea as bed posts are usually sturdy & where he stays daily sheet changes just don't happen.
In Bali I tend to rely on Travellers Cheques and some cash with cards for emergencies. I only take whatever cash I can afford to lose. Sure, most people who take only cash have no problems. I prefer to err on the side of caution.
