first time visit . . . night life

My friend and i are planning our first trip, 10 nights. was going to stay a couple of nights in kuta, then on to Ubud for a couple of nights and then to Gili Air. Would we better to stay in ubud longer instead of staying in Kuta as we can travel there in the day? I would like to go out at least one night in kuta, can i get a late night taxi back to Ubud??
