Even worse are hotels that "forget" to attach the (electronic) safe to anything solid. It is thus a good idea to check that already on arrival.
If the safe is not attached to anything, it is naturally very easy to either remove it or replace it with a new, empty one that you of course cannot open and thus need help to open. At least then you can see how very easy it is to open an electronic safe without your personal code, just as Imagem mentioned above.
And unfortunately you can never ever prove what was originally in the safe. It is always word against word. Fingerprints? Well, the friendly staff has taken upon itself to clean all surfaces of your room on a daily basis to make your room nice and clean, exactly as you want it.
