Actually at Immigration I was once asked why I have a work permit when I don't earn any money??? I looked at the Customs Official blankly and said because I am not allowed to work here without one. She said, if you own the business and are not drawing a wage and do charitable work then you do not need a work permit. I looked at her blankly again and walked out in shock that I have been paying $1200US a year for my work permit, rang my lawyer and he said she was wrong. Not sure how a woman who is a Senior Manager at Immigration could tell me the wrong information but just in case I have my work permit. I would never risk being kicked out of this country and leave my family behind.

So, moral of the story, don't do what someone else tells you until you speak to a few different authorities on the matter and then make up your own mind.
