Maybe pop the Roops in an envelope so he can open it when you leave or are out of sight. Might be worth slipping him a note too outling your appreciation and maybe your contact details (email). We have done this with a tour guide we had in South America, we were told not to hand over cash so everyone could see (more like the boss) as it may tend to cause embarressment and jealousy with other guides. We are still in contact with her 5 years later via email.

If you are wanting to buy him food maybe stock up on the everyday things like rice fruit veges etc and leave it in his car and tell him it is for his family etc.

I too think $50 is a fair tip.
Maybe a gift from home, eg keyring, a cap of something Aussie or sporting would be appreciated too. Up to you.

Good on you for considering this as I am sure many wouldn't.

Cheers
