We have been up to Petulu village north of Ubud a few times. Last August we saw far more than we have earlier in the year.
Not the thousands I had expected.
Petulu village also appears to make the cremation 'coffins' big scary creatures etc.
If you head out of Ubud along Jl Raya Ubud, and turn left at the big statue, into Jl Raya Andong, up towards Tegallalang, you look for the Petulu sign. Its not easy to see. Its about 4km on you left where the road comes in on your left.
The village is narrow and not easy to turn around. I think you will find if you continue on past the herons, the road comes back into Ubud alongside the palace.
Park along the side of the road around 'Best viw of the bird' 'restaurant. (Its on your left and has rice paddies out front, where you can watch the herons fly past, then squabble over who roosts where). Its zero star. You can sit on aged plastic chairs and sip a beer or soft drink.
