He had the lease on the Maharta for 15 years but now shares the lease and profits with the Balinese owners who, as you say, want to sell. The reason that things are so tired is that the owners demand 50% of net profit and any maintainence or any other spending must come from Gorge's share.
Not much incentive for him so expect the place to get more tired as time goes on.
