Whilst I have seen some people do this, a Travel Agent friend from Manado was asked by a Stewardess on a Manado/Kulala Lumpur flight to please not continue to eat the sandwich he had brought on-board with him.
Whilst he realised that the crew member was only doing her job, he wrote to Tony Fernandez, Air Asia's CEO to suggest that if this was indeed their policy, then it should be shown on Boarding Passes and also in the Menu Section of the In-flight Magazine. He received a response from Tony Fernandez advising that he would consider the advice.
You may very well get away with consuming your own food but you could also face the embarrassment of being "chastised" by a crew member and asked to refrain from eating it.
