People often leave cards in the machine, and it only takes a small distraction for your time to be up and your money gets sucked back in.... if it happnes here you get your money back, may take a while and you may have to lodge a calim, but it isnt only total fools it happens to, its quite common.
And the bank wouldnt be compensating you.....they would be getting your money back that was withdrawn out of your account and was "kept" by the ATM!
