We stay up that end as well. For a close surf, surf is better down towards the Legian Beach Hotel. Get yourself down to Kuta Reef for a surf, pay the boat driver to drop you back outside legian beach hotel (or thereabouts, you might get them to take you further) and then you can walk back to your hotel easily.
