Usually best to book direct with the hotel, usually cheaper. Request a confirmation email and make sure you print this out and take it with you - I usually take copies of all emails including my requests. Remember the hotel staff may not be so prompt in replying and that English is their second language.
If you have not had a confirmation - don't worry, ring them! If they confirm requests over the phone etc still request it in writing. Print out all emails and take them with you - that is VERY important. I have more problems when I use an agent. The communication seems to hiccup when it goes from client to agent to wholesaler. When something has gone wrong in the past I've not known who was at fault so couldn't stand my ground. I won't ever use an agent again. Talk to whoever your credit card is with, they can be very helpful in advising you re using your card on line. You can save heaps by booking on line yourself. Always check that the website pages you use your credit on has a closed padlock or a verified security process. As long as you have evidence with you of your booking/special requests etc you should be fine - you can stand your ground if there is a hiccup.
You will save a bundle booking on line.
Go for it and have a great time.
