I had the same meal as you in September. The Ikan Bilis or dried fish is an Indonesian staple. The fish are grown in the rice paddies and dried in the sun.

One of my most enduring memories was watching rats leaping from tray to tray of Ikan Bilis in the public market in Yogjakarta.

Ikan Bilis is strange to a bule but very normal food for an Indonesian.
