Firstly you don't have the same security as a credit card, but then you aren't paying fees for that unlikely privelage. You get to spend your own money at any outlet that accepts mastercard, and you can load it with just enough cash to cover the trip. That way you don't lose 10 grand (or whatever your max is,)if it goes missing. You can load them with nominated currencies, unfortunately Rupiah isn't one of them, but US$ is, and you can pay US$ instead of rupiah in many cases. It is meant to save you currency exchange fees and you aren't at the mercy of the banks unclear exchange rate methodology. I always got screwed by NAB, the rate on the street would be 8000Rp per AuD$, but the visa statment I recieved was 7300 on that same date. Plus fees.
