I have stayed in both Hotels during the last years but would always prefer the Padma.
Main reason is the location - you walk out of the hotel and are in Jalan Padma with shops, restaurants, bars, just everything nearby.
At the Sofitel you have to walk a bit - quite dark in the evening.
Beach used to be nicer at the Sofitel but now that they have built the Anantara nearby I don't know.
Pool at the Padma is much bigger.
