They've come up with a fake keypad that overlays the real one. It records your keystrokes and saves your PIN at the same time your card is skimmed. When they remove the card skimmer that stores the magnetic strip info, they also remove the keypad overlay with the stored PIN information.
It has nothing to do with fingerprints.
