Last trip I had all my wooden items etc in the top of my bag and declared. Customs guys had a joke about - did I leave any wooden items in Bali. I also told them that on my first trip I had bought through a wooden item that was confiscated because it was infected. They said - well you know what "not" to buy - and didn't really look at the wooden items. Then right near the wood they found a bag of green tea body scrub I had bought, that I hadn't even thought to declare - they were far more iterested in that (looked like a bag of drugs I must admit and we had a laugh about that). However they advised me that it was ground fine enough not to be a problem. Safer to declare for all concerned (cause we don't really want to bring any nasties back to Aus).
