I've done them all, tapes, downloads, books. I've lived in Indonesia for a year and been married to an Indonesian for 6 years. Living there I didn't hear Indonesian spoken much as they spoke their own language. My husband has reasonable English, so we don't speak Indonesian (which, of course, isn't his first language either).
I've learnt lots of words and phrases from books and downloads, but I can't hold a conversation.
I wonder if anyone has taught themself Indonesian that way and is actually good enough to hold a conversation which is more than 'yes I'm married and have x kids' or 'yes I've been to Bali many times'.
I've also enrolled in tafe courses in the past only to have them cancelled due to lack of numbers. One even after the course started!
