Hindu new year.

hi all - someone said on here (in a reply posting) that it is the Hindu new year on Tuesday and Wednesday and that alot of things close down that day.............does anyone have anymore info on this? How many places/shops close down these two days?
I am only there bout 7 days so having 2 of them out of action is going to be a bummer.
