The advertised rate per person for the VOA in Jakarta on the day we arrived was a touch under $32 - so it was actually around $4 in change we should have received. In Jakarta, they have an electronic board with the cost of VOA in various currencies.

Even if it was supposed to be $10 change (which is based on the exchange rate you would never actually get anywhere), it still would have cost more than that to exchange AUD to US currency before leaving home.

Aus Post requires a minimum $200, other places charge $8 fee - then add fuel costs plus time on top of that. I did look into exchanging before this last trip because it was $75 required. I've never bothered when traveling solo. It was going to cost over $100 to buy US$75 at every place I got quoted.
