I am also a teacher who recently (last school holidays) visited Bali and bought gifts for my students - all 26 of them. I agree, it can get quite costly.
I picked up surfboard keyrings and pencils with the small painted carvings on top. My students loved them.
I bought my gifts from a set price wholesale shop opposite Supanova supermarket, which is located on Jl Raya Tuban. To get there from Kuta Square, go up Jl Singasari (directly opposite Art Markets, where Ramayana and Kuta Beach Club are) away from the beach, walk several hundred metres, turn right at the corner where the school is and walk about 200 metres. Supanova will be on your right at the first main intersection. Keep walking a little bit and on your right are several set price wholesale shops.
There is also a large wholsale bead and sequin shop just before you get to the set price shops that sells some amazing stuff very cheap.
Have a great break :)
