I found the people friendly and strangers would go out of their way to help me - and they weren't looking to get something back in return.
From the Volunteer Bangkok guide who showed me around Bangkok for a day (she paid her own way for the day too) and who refused any tip or payment, to strangers lending me their mobile phones to make calls when i couldn't work out how to use public phones, making mending alterations for free, women in the queue in supermarkets taking a huge interest in my purchases and then they'd step out of the queue to go get me the correct product because i cannot read Thai. Eg they exchanged my toothpaste for babies to toothpaste for adults. The list of the ways the Thai people helped me is huge.
