Thought I would offer some advice for new travellers to Bali on some of the more dangerous aspects of the destination.

Crossing the Road

This normaly simple task can place newbies at great risk when wanting to walk anywhere. A couple of suggested techniques used are as follows.

1.The Superman Crossing
Although not often used these days it can be quite effective when performed correctly and with conviction. Simply wait for a gap(this may be quite small by western standards)in traffic, then stride off the footpath into the first lane, facing the oncoming traffic. Stand with feet planted firmly with legs slightly apart, place one hand on your hip with the other raised in the stop gesture. Continue across the road in this fashion. This method has become a dieing art and unfortunately not often used.

2. The Shadow Crossing.
A bit of a learned technique but reduces the likelyhood of death considerably. Wait for a group of people crossing in the same direction and attach yourself to the rear of the group. Ideally these people have been shopping and are carrying many bags with clothing, pillows and other padding to soften the impact of any collision. The added advantages of this technique are you may meet new friends and have two or more people to blame for any injury.

3.Drunk Man Walking
Very often used with great success. A drunk aussie is the only thing feared more than anything else in Bali. Simply, always carry an empty bottle of Bintang when walking, and when required to cross, lean heavily to one side and start singing as you lurch onto the road. This method is successful regardless the time of day Warning: Do not make eye contact with drivers or show any fear. This will only provide evidence of your bluff and you will be run over for cheekiness. Balinese drivers are the second most feared thing in Bali!!

Some misstakes often made.

Footpaths were not built for pedestrians. Stalls, markets, temples. places of sleep, mechanical workshops and impromptu gaming centres will take precedence over pedestrians always.

Never place your trust in traffic lights. It is believed these lights were put in place only to amuse children passengers of vehicles periodically. Vehicles that stop at these lights are not obeying any command, they just want to shut up their kids.

Hope this helps
