But my husband came in on a Social visa years ago and got it in Bangkok, mind you he had all the right paperwork, ie" he was here on a "social visa" for 6 months as a relative of someone who had a business in Bali and he was training (no pay) for that 6 months, all his meals and accommodation were paid for as part of it. Not sure if that has changed but that was how a social visa worked back then. try the bali expat site about visas. expat.or.id
You can get Visa extensions all over Bali (there are signs above tour offices), if you are willing to pay, not sure how legal it is but if you put money in the right pockets you will get your extension in about 4 days...about 2 years ago it was at about 1.1 million for an extension, not sure how much it costs now but some friends did it with no hassles.
My husband and I have a KITAS so that's how we live here. Many have retirement visas (55 years). I heard the other day that there are 3000 expats living in Bali but actually up to 70,000 foreigners living here part time on some sort of "visa".
