The last few years i have booked my own trips and used A/rooms ALOT & also others like: Wotif, Agoda, Qantas Holidays on-line, & probably others as well. I've never had a problem.
The agent probably would say that as I guess she's going to miss out on a commission.
Occasionally I've found that an agent, ie. Escape Travel, has got me a better deal than I could find online. Other pro would be if there is a problem with your accommodation you can at least go back to your agent and get them to sort it out.
Mostly I've found A/rooms to be cheapest but sometimes you have to wait a few days for them to get back to you, then sometimes it's not available at that internet rate. Best to get in early as you can with them for best chance.
Sometimes good to check with hotel direct as sometimes that's a better price. I just got that with Sanur PPS's. A good deal thru hotel that I couldn't get with on-line agents.
Good luck with whatever you decide. : )
