Hi Barnaby, not an expert, just relating from my own experience. But thanks for the compliment just the same ...lol.
We took a good 3/4 hr to walk into Candidasa, we didn't rush and it is a flat walk. There is a long driveway/road out of the Rama before you get to the main road (your turn right when you get there). There are a few warungs up the top of this driveway near the Rama where you can pick up water, drinks etc. We got 2 bottles of water supplied by hotel each day - but it's never enough.
We found the cost of food and drinks at the hotel reasonable with a middle price range. We loved the food at the Garpu, it had a good international range as they get a lot of Europeans staying there so bound to have something that appeals to all tastes. The seafood is fresh and we saw hotel staff taking boats out, fun watching what they bought back. All sorts of fish etc I've never seen before. We found breakfast not as good as in other hotels but we're a bit spoilt - there was nothing wrong with it just didn't have such a wide selection. We didn't starve though and it was really pleasant sitting in the restaurant on the water.
If you've never been to Candidasa before there aren't a great deal of shops etc but it's a very realaxing area. If you don't feel like walking there are always "tranport" guys hanging around the top of the driveway. Cheers.
